Another day, Another Wordle And another Wordle clone offering a delightful or bizarre twist on the viral word game.
A quick recap: In addition to Josh Wardle's wildly successful Daily format(Opens in a new tab) There's Lewdle (rude 5-letter-words only) in addition to Absurdle (a truly evil variant that switches up the process of guessing), Primel (five-digit prime numbers only), Sweardle(Opens in a new window) (four-letter words, naturally) And there's further variations are planned. But like the original flavour, all of these refresh each day, meaning you don't need to be guessing endless words to your hearts content. That's the whole point -- Wordle isn't attempting to monopolize and monetise your attention like some games or apps do, but it's a fact that once you've done the day's task, it's up until the next day. Because you're human, and so wired to seek out joy, you're always looking for to have a bit more. Therefore, Dordle is granting your wish as an mouse's paw(Opens in a new tab) would.
Dordle --as described by developers Zaratustra Productions(Opens in another window) (aka Guilherme S. Tows) as "Wordle plus Wordle" -- is definitely in the perilous category of Wordle variants, and that's not only because there is zero clarity on how to pronounce the word. (Doordle? Durdle?)
The game is comprised of both Wordle grids that are side-by-side with the standard format - with six odds of guessing five letters, blacked-out areas for letters that aren't present in the solution yellow squares to represent letters in the wrong location, and green for letters in the right area.
The difference, however it is that even though there is double the wordle-ing there are only six guesses -- each of which applies to both games at the same time. Each time, you have to make a decision: Can I accurately guess enough for more details on all the words? do I be willing to give up a guess for one side in order to solve the other?
If you're lucky enough and/or smart If you're lucky and/or smart, you'll be able solve one side right in the first few attempts and still have a few leftover to focus on solving the second. But if you're able solve the first one on your Fourth or Fifth guess -- especially if you focused only on getting that side solved in the absence of more useful guesses on the other side , you could end up throwing the Hail Mary word in there in an attempt to find the twofer.
What about those convenient colour-coded keyboards? This could be the most creative twist. While you're working on both puzzles, letters that were predicted are split in half -- depending on whether there's an appropriately placed E in the left-hand grid but no E in the right-hand side of the word, for example, the E on the keyboard will be half grey and half green on the corresponding sides. When you've solved one of the sides the letters that you solved get an unobtrusive green stripe down one side, and the second side's relevant colors take over most of the key. This means that the keyboard is actively helping you focus on the unsolved part.
The positive side is that in addition to an everyday Dordle that's identical for all players, Zaratustra also made you a non-daily, randomised version that you can play dordle games for as many times in a row as you'd like to refine your game plan (and your vocab). It's true that every day and infinite version(Opens in a separate window) generate the now-familiar blank grid you could copy to your clipboard to show off your genius (or your failures or even your mistakes, plural).
(image: https://picography.co/page/1/600)The problem is, as you may imagine, that unlimited Dordles makes it as addictive as it is difficult. A timely reminder to anyone developing their own Wordle variant right now That you can have too much of something good.
